Did you know that you can raise funds for a Zimbabwean charity – at no extra cost to yourself – just by changing a setting in your Amazon App? Have you, like me, prepared an Amazon shopping list in readiness for Christmas? With Amazon Smile, Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases to a charity of your choosing, at no additional cost to you. I’ve just found out that you can utilize this on the mobile app too. The best news is that there are LOADS of Zimbabwean charities that you choose from.
It just takes a moment to change the setting on your Amazon app to give much-needed and much-appreciated pennies to some great organizations. It really is worth it. Please do read below for instructions on how to do this, and spread the news to your friends so that we can all maximize our fundraising momentum ahead of the peak Christmas shopping period. Plus, tell us in the comments which Zimbabwean charity you support and why. If you run an Amazon Smile charity, please tell us about it too.
* Note: Obviously we should aim to do the majority of our shopping with small businesses (of which I am one, selling Zimbabwean-made crafts on The Impala Collection), because the money goes directly to the small business rather than the multinational. Carly at Mom of Two Little girls has written a list of some UK-based Zimbabwean small businesses here. However, let’s face it: many people (including myself) use Amazon, especially during lockdown restrictions. Let’s utilize the tools that we have: in this case, donating to deserving humanitarian and wildlife organizations through Amazon Smile. I have personally been approached by Zimbabwean organizations asking for support on Amazon Smile, because they need every bit that they can get. Let’s all chip in where we can!
How to set up Amazon Smile on the mobile app
- Open the Amazon app on your phone and tap on the Menu icon which looks like three horizontal lines (☰). On my phone this is on the bottom right.
- Tap on ‘Settings’.
- Tap on ‘AmazonSmile’ and then follow the on-screen instructions to turn on AmazonSmile.
- You will be able to choose just one charity to receive the donations. You can either search for ‘Zimbabwe’ in the list of charities, or enter the name of charity if known.
- That’s it – use the app as usual. You’ll see the same products and pay the same price. Every time you buy something, a small donation will be made to your chosen charity.
How to use Amazon Smile on a Desktop or laptop (computer)
- Instead of going to the ‘normal’ Amazon website, just google ‘Amazon smile’. You will be led to the Amazon Smile website which in the UK is: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/ (Note the difference: it starts with ‘smile.amazon…’). This is the website you can now use every time to do your Amazon shopping. Bookmark it if needed!
- Enter your existing username and password to sign in.
- Follow the prompts to select just one charity to receive the donations. You can either search for ‘Zimbabwe’ in the list of charities, or enter the name of charity if known.
