Great Zimbabwe’s ancient city ruins have intrigued both locals and visitors for centuries. The local name was “Dzimba dza mabwe” (roughly “Houses of Stone”), or “Zimbabwe” in short. When Rhodesia became independent in 1980, the nation was named after this retired city: the country itself was called Zimbabwe. The ruins of the city then the monument called as “Great Zimbabwe”, and are located just outside the current town of Masvingo.
